During the II Latinosan Conference, panels were held on the following topics: i) Universal Sanitation: Progress and Challenges; ii) Impact of Climate Change on Sanitation; iii) Sanitation and Integration of Public Policies; iv) Integrated Urban Water Management; v) Efficient Management of Sanitation Services; and vi) Financing for Sustainable Management of Services.
The most relevant aspects of the II Latinosan Conference are:
Prioritize basic sanitation among national development policies, including: protection of water sources for water supply; sustainable management of rainwater, wastewater, and solid waste; proper disposal of sanitary waste; and promotion of good hygiene practices.
Promote new investment models, planning instruments, appropriate regulation for each country, and strengthen the integration of basic sanitation with public policies, in order to promote the sustainability of sanitation initiatives, adequate management, universal access to services, and the achievement of objectives at the local, regional, and national levels.
Promote research programs in sanitation, with emphasis on the generation of simplified and low-cost operating technology, appropriate to the socio-environmental conditions of the population.
Promote the development and implementation of disaster risk prevention and management policies in the water and sanitation sector, considering the impacts of climate variations.
To encourage sanitation service providers and the private sector to assume the commitments and develop the necessary actions to meet the millennium goals, with the purpose of achieving the universalization of services in Latin America.
Strengthen intergovernmental cooperation in the region, with the formation of a “LATINOSAN Inter-Country Working Group”, composed of high-level representatives who will meet annually to monitor the development of policies in the sector and organize LATINOSAN 2013, which will be held in Panama City.
